Busy day at Great Basin! In the afternoon breezes of Reno, John-Paul DiTomaso flew N328ME to his first solo in the pattern around Reno for Runway 16R as his instructor Levi Mellows looked on. John-Paul wants to work on his Commercial Pilot’s License. He may even use it for the occasional trip to the Bay Area to visit family. It sounds like he might even get his girlfriend to fly with him! That’s not a bad date. Congratulations, John-Paul!

Ethan Chinowsky flew to Flight Instructor status today out in Silver Springs as he taught S-Turns to his examiner (along with a slug of other goodies). Ethan comes to us originally from New Zealand and has done part of his flight instruction there and part here in Reno. Today’s flight didn’t earn him any push-ups for mistakes as he completes this step toward flying professionally for the airlines. Mr. Chinowsky, you’ve earned yourself a nice glass of Scotch! Congratulations!
Today Mariah Connell soared to a successful check-ride in N328ME over the skies of Silver Springs. After a few false starts with the smoke and weather, Mariah aced the check-ride with her instructor Danny Britson watching from the ground. Mariah has been diligently working on this goal with the discipline of a marathoner training for a Botson Qualifier! Mariah serves in the Nevada Air National Guard and achieved this goal not only for personal satisfaction but to help her as she heads off to Navigator School in the next few days! Mariah has been the epitome of persistence, perseverance, and preeminence. Excellent work! We’re proud of you, Mariah!
With his movie star good looks and command of the radio like and old school disc jockey, Jon Watkins soared to solo flight today as his instructor, Brenden Georg, watched on. He flew N37JA at KRNO and completed several laps in the pattern on runway 16L. Jon is very motivated to make this all happen and continues to brighten our days with his infectious smile and commitment to his training that only a true fitness master, like himself, can muster. Good work, Jon!
Congratulations to Russ Maddock who soloed this morning at KCXP, runway 27 in N752DW!! Russ took a Discovery Flight with GBA early August and from there set a strict timeline to accomplish his aviation goals. Needless to say, he is well on his way. He started with strong ground knowledge after receiving excellent instruction in the TMCC private pilot course. He is like a sponge and soaks up anything aviation which is evident in the way he is progressing. Russ shows up to his lessons extremely prepared and studies maneuvers and chair flies at home all while working full time for the Nevada ANG. Awesome job to Russ and his instructor, Pete Applegate! We hope you took the afternoon to celebrate this huge milestone!! Time to start adding more numbers to that PIC column.
With today’s return of the forest fire smoke, it was the perfect day to earn an Instrument Rating! Congratulations to Kevin Marshall who flew a few approaches, a hold, and some other hooded goodies around Reno in N752DW. Kevin worked diligently with his instructors, Bob Bennett and Brenden Georg, to achieve this rating. His pathway started in late spring and was made all the better by his supportive family. He’s considering flying professionally - which we think would be a great idea! Congratulations, Kevin! Excellent work. Oh, you can take the foggles off now if you want.
