For our second success story of the day: Oh, the jokes we could make about a Rusty Pilot. Alas, this is no joking matter. Today, Rusty Taft kicked Austin out of the instructor seat and soloed N752DW at Stead. Rusty works for the Nevada Air National Guard as a C130 mechanic. You’d think that a guy with a busted air conditioner would hunker down in the cool but Rusty felt the heat and got it done! Nice work to you and your instructor. The PPL will be here soon!

Yes, the term PIC stands for Pilot in Command but with respect to your learning it can also be viewed as Pilot in Charge. Today Nate Garduque earned his private pilot certificate after taking charge of his instruction and coming to us to finish his training. Nate is an APRN with Renown and knows what it takes to be in charge of the medical needs of others. Now, he has used his superb bedside manner to be in charge of his learning and to take command of his piloting. His knowledge is encyclopedic and his aviating precise. Nate is the perfect example of being an active part of your flight instruction and doing what it takes. Congratulations to you and to your instructor, Richard, who is equally impressed with your abilities!
He came, he saw, he captured! That’s right, this morning Kurtis Lemay, photographer, UNR student, and drone pilot, developed some new skills and soloed N495SP at KRTS, runway 08. Just picture the smile on this his face as he felt the freedom of PIC. Troy Ware, his CFI, stood by making sure Kurtis did not shake during the shot. No negatives here, Kurtis flew SP like a pro! Kurtis is another RARA scholarship recipient that is powering through his private pilot training. Already an air space expert, Kurits framed the shot, focused, and captured the moment. Way to go!!
What do you do when temps hit 100? Anything but be stuck in a hot hangar with CFI/CFII Richard Brong learning about aircraft systems, right? Unless you are a RARA Scholarship student. These motivated young aviators endured the heat to learn about how a single engine airplane works. At least Richard treated them to cupcakes and caprisuns. Watch for more success coming soon from these awesome young students!
Guess what 16 year old Koree Bostrom was doing at 6am this morning? This young go-getter tasted solo flight, flying her first PIC laps at KRNO, runway 16L, in N37JA!! Koree is an amazing young lady; all star student athlete at Damonte Ranch High School and now a soloed student pilot. Koree is one of the Reno Air Race Association scholarship participants and wasted no time putting those funds to use. She is working through a rigorous ground and flight training schedule with a goal of having her Private Pilot Certificate right after her 17th birthday and right before school starts in early August. If her success so far is any indicator, she will definitely hit her goal. Awesome job to a determined young lady and her CFI Danny Britson!
Last we saw him he was but the learner, now he is the master!! Kevin Munson, master of the skies and N2291C, is officially a private pilot! Just in time to beat the smoke and heat, Kevin displayed to his examiner he’s got what it takes to man the left seat, and to no one’s surprise, passed his checkride in none other than the G1000 princess. If he’s not flying airplanes, you can find Kevin studying computer science, practicing on the simulator, or working on his ground school (for fun…). Congratulations to this devoted aviator and his instructor, Troy Ware on another amazing accomplishment! Perhaps Instrument is on the horizon 😉.
We are moving into the mid 90s and 100s next week, so, as a reminder, summer heat restrictions are in effect. The restrictions for aircraft weight and outside temperature and additional heat related info are as follows:
The schedule is open for 5am flights. It is an awesome time to fly!! The front door of Atlantic is locked until 6 so call the number on the glass door to be let in. Afternoon flights during the summer are hit and miss based on winds and the above restrictions so plan your flights accordingly. If you book after noon, plan on a 50/50 chance of flying. Safety is the number one concern. Then reducing strain on the aircraft engines Please chat with GBA staff and/or your instructor if you have any questions. Airplane Mode: ON! Will Levin spent the morning with his head in the clouds, literally. This guy is now a CFI!! Will passed the grueling CFI oral to then head up in the thermally Northern Nevada sky to teach his examiner a few things, all from the right seat. Back into KRNO, Will found out he can further share his aviation passion by teaching others how to fly. Will is another zero to CFI at GBA and we could not be happier for him. It has been awesome watching him progress the last couple years from that first discovery flight, solo, private pilot, instrument, commercial, and now CFI. Plus all the ups, downs, obstacles, and incredible successes along the way. This newly engaged fella can keep the celebration going. Bravo Zulu to this Navy Veteran 🇺🇸Awesome job to Will and his CFI Danny Britson!
Pictured is Will today passing his CFI checkride today and his solo flight from March 2020. Hasn’t lost his trademark pose :) Happy 4th of July! 🇺🇸
It’s Independence Day! In the midst of all the barbeques, firecrackers, and fun, take a moment to honor the men and women who fought and fight for the freedom that we’re celebrating. And in the spirit of pride and unity, we’d also like to thank you—for supporting small businesses like ours and keeping the backbone of our country strong. Have a great day! Your friends at GBA 🛫 Wondering why CFI/CFII Jack Darlington has been MIA? He was in Ohio getting his Commercial Multi-Engine Certificate!! Huge congratulations to Jack and this awesome accomplishment! Jack is back tomorrow and based on his schedule, most of you already knew. Back to some sweet single engine time 😁 See you soon Jack and congrats again!
